This week, Ambassador Bojan Šošić, Ambassador of Bosnia and Herzegovina to the Kingdom of Sweden visited Stockholm Environment Institute (SEI) to discuss environmental sustainability and the country’s path towards EU membership. The meeting aimed to strengthen collaboration as Bosnia and Herzegovina (BiH) addresses socio-political and environmental, as well as climate challenges, while aligning with EU requirements.
During the meeting, Robert Watt, SEI’s Engagement Director, presented the organization’s new strategy, emphasizing a reinforced commitment to advance sustainable development and environmental action. He showcased SEI’s work in supporting cities, countries and regions to achieve their transition goals, by helping them develop roadmaps, frameworks and climate investment planning. He also gave examples of how SEI in the past have supported countries in their paths to become members of the European Union, by giving timely and relevant policy advice, mentioning Estonia as one example.
SEIs work and partnership in Bosnia and Herzegovina
Bernardas Padegimas, Team Leader of the Environmental Policy and Strategy team at SEI, highlighted the valuable partnership with the Swedish Embassy in Bosnia and Herzegovina. He also emphasized SEI’s work in the Western Balkans and Eastern European countries, focusing on environmental sustainability and supporting them on their path toward EU accession.
Sasa Solujic, Project Manager at SEI and of BiH SuTra, underlined efforts to apply SEI research and Swedish experience in Bosnia and Herzegovina, on climate finance, circular economy and certainly the flagship programme BiH SuTra. She also briefed the Ambassador on the country’s environmental strategy and action plan (ESAP), developed with SEI's support, which is pending government approval after e-consultation.
Cooperation is key
The Ambassador underscored the necessity of integrating political and economic efforts where sustainability has an important place, particularly in the light of the ongoing Berlin Process and the country’s strategic positioning within the Western Balkans. He also stressed the importance of cooperation with Sweden and the Nordic region in general, especially in advancing key priorities, such as sustainability, green transition and the rule of law.
Bosnia and Herzegovina’s path to EU integration and sustainable development is shaped by strong international partnerships. This meeting provided timely and needed discussions as well as opportunities for strategic collaborations between SEI and the Embassy in the coming months.
