Sustainable waste management is one of the priority areas in the BiH SuTra project. On 16 December, representatives from municipalities and cities gathered in Banovići for a dedicated workshop about waste composition. This event marked an important step towards developing a harmonised and practical approach for analysing household waste in BiH.

Representatives of local self-government units involved in the BiH SuTra project gathered in Breza on 2 December 2025 for the workshop “Enhancing Wastewater Management within Municipal and City Sustainability Transition Plans – Lessons from Sweden.”

On the 2nd of December 2025 leading Swedish and local expertise convened a workshop in Breza to help municipalities, cities and utilities in Bosnia and Herzegovina accelerate sustainable wastewater management as part of the implementation of their sustainability transition plans.

Access to sustainable and attractive public transport is one of the key components for liveable cities and towns. It can make cities better places to live and work, driving trade, economic growth, and jobs. Sustainability is not only about reducing pollution, but it is also a tool that can promote social equity and safety through accessible and safe transportation options.

The BiH SuTra project marked an important milestone with the successful kick-off meeting of its newly established International Advisory Board (IAB). Bringing together leading experts from European institutions, international networks, and academia, the IAB will play a key role in supporting the project’s strategic direction and ensuring alignment with European best practices in sustainable and just transition.

On November 12, a capacity building workshop on district heating was held in Banovići, organized by the Sustainable Transition of Bosnia and Herzegovina (BiH SuTra) project. Participants explored practical ways to plan and implement more sustainable district heating solutions in their municipalities and cities.

When district heating expert Ariana Tanha from the Swedish company Ekzel AB took the floor at a workshop in Banovići yesterday, participants were excited to hear about Sweden’s experience in building one of the world’s most advanced and sustainable district heating systems. Drawing on years of professional experience, Tanha also shared practical insights on the economics of combined heat and power (CHP) plants – systems that simultaneously produce both heat and electricity.

The Sustainable Transition of Bosnia and Herzegovina – “BiH SuTra” project continues to grow and evolve, reaffirming the country’s commitment to a sustainable and inclusive future. In September 2025, three new local communities – the Municipality of Gacko, the Municipality of Kakanj and the City of Gradiška – officially joined the project, bringing new perspectives and energy in building a greener and fairer Bosnia and Herzegovina.

The BiH SuTra project aims to reduce climate impact and support a transition towards a low-carbon, resource-efficient and environmentally sustainable future – one that aligns seamlessly with broader development goals. At the heart of this effort lies the circular transition.

During the annual Sarajevo Energy and Climate Week at the end of September 2025, SEIs Executive Director Måns Nilsson visited Bosnia and Herzegovina and was interviewed by the TV channel N1 on the topics of sustainability and just transition. Three new local self-government units (LSGUs) – Municipality of Gacko, City of Gradiška, and Municipality of Kakanj – have officially joined the initiative, strengthening the collective effort to build a greener, fairer tomorrrow.

In turbulent times with escalating climate change impacts and pressing energy challenges, the third Sarajevo Energy and Climate Week (SECW) brought together key stakeholders from across the energy and climate sectors in Bosnia and Herzegovina and the Western Balkans to showcase sustainable policies and practices. SEI and BiH SuTra representatives took part.

At the side event titled “Launch of New Partnerships for Transition”, organized within the Sarajevo Energy and Climate Week (SECW 2025), a Memorandum of Understanding was signed with three new local self-government units (LSGUs): Municipality of Gacko, City of Gradiška, and Municipality of Kakanj.
